Beginners' training sessions

Training sessions are open to anyone who has taken a beginner's lesson. There is no charge for the sessions, but once the trails are open, you will need a club membership for insurance purposes*.

There are two intakes for the 2018 / 2019 season:
  • Fall intake closes Dec. 9, 2018.
  • The January intake opens after the Beginners' Workshop on Jan. 6, 2019.
We may have a third intake starting after the Feb. 3, 2019 Beginners' Workshop. Depends on how long the snow lasts.

See the Calendar page for location.

We cover:
  • basic mushing commands (gee/haw, on-by, etc.)
  • passing other teams safely
  • working alongside other teams
  • general trail etiquette
This is also a good opportunity to ask questions about how to further your training, talk about skis, kick sleds, techniques, waxes and more.

For this, you need your dog(s) in harness and need to dress for the weather.

Skijorers need skis, poles, boots and a belt and gangline.

Kick sledders need either their own kick sled, the club's rental kick sleds, or must make arrangements to borrow one from the three club coordinators.

* To take part in the guided beginner sessions on snow, you must be a member of Snow Motion, as per our agreement with Parks and the City of Winnipeg.

Dues are $20 a year. They are collected during Snow Motion events, or you can ask us to send you a PDF of the form, which you can print and mail in to us with a cheque made out to Snow Motion.
